Bees have been in existence for over 4,500 million years. Of the 8,000,000 known types of insects, it alone enjoys immunity and cannot be destroyed by bacteria.

Apitherapy (The term comes from the Latin apis, which means "bee.") or bee therapy, is the use of products of the common honeybee for therapeutic purposes. The history of apitherapy extends back to ancient Egypt, Greece and China. Even Hippocrates, the Greek physician known as the "father of medicine," used bee venom to treat arthritis and other joint problems.

Austrian physician Phillip Terc initiated the modern study of bee venom and intentional bee stings when he published his article "Report about a Peculiar Connection Between the Beestings and Rheumatism" in 1888. The late beekeeper Charles Mraz of Middlebury, Vermont, is credited with popularizing bee venom therapy over the past 60 years in the United States.

Today, thousands of medical professionals and lay practitioners use apitherapy throughout the world. Honeybee venom, bee pollen, raw honey, royal jelly and propolis are the products generally considered to have medicinal effects.

These products are said to be effective against a wide range of ailments, from arthritis and chronic pain to multiple sclerosis and cancer, although few scientific studies have as yet proved their benefits.

Raw Propolis

Propolis Story - Bees have relied upon Propolis for 46 million years and have prospered as a result. Its name is derived from ancient Greece and translates as "Defender of the city" (city relating to the bee hive).

Propolis is a resin collected by the honey bee from selected trees and plants. The bees take the resin to their hive where they mix and modify it, turning it into a glue-like substance with which they seal up their hive to protect against infection. The honey bees hive is recognised as one of the most sterile environments in the world.

Propolis contains a complex blend of some 160 biochemical elements including beeswax, essential oils, vitamins and most importantly bioflavonoids. These uses are significant because they take advantage of the antibacterial and antifungal effects of propolis in protecting the colony against diseases.

Propolis has been shown to kill the bee's most ardent bacterial foe, Bacillus larvae - the cause of American Foul Brood (Mlagan and Sulimanovic, 1982; Meresta and Meresta, 1988). The use of propolis thus reduces the chance of infection in the developing brood and the growth of decomposing bacteria in dead animal tissue.
