Synopsis

Admission Accomplished: Lesbian Nation Years edited by Jill Johnston Deposit: SGD25.00
Refund: SGD17.00

This collection of Johnston writings reminds us how far American society has come with respect to gender and sexuality and how far it has to go. The 56 essays in this book reintroduce us to an original thinker who shares her thoughts. A melange of literary criticism; articulate descriptions of coming out, gay marriage, misogyny, and parenting; and the playful use of language. Forthright about her language, she makes no apologies for its fire or its irreverence. Readers will note how far-reaching Johnston's perspective was; her "radical" espousals have become part and parcel of today's rhetoric and laid the groundwork for other writers coming out in a mass-media context.

Blue Heaven Joe Keagan
Deposit: SGD21.50
Refund: SGD13.50

Set in contemporary New York, Blue Heaven is the hilarious tale of a most unlikely couple and their brilliant plan to earn a fortune in gifts on their way to the altar. Philip Cavanaugh, a homosexual and struggling songwriter, becomes embroiled in a scheme by his former lover, Gilbert Selwyn, who plans to marry a wealthy duchess's daughter to reap the wedding gifts. The plot grows more complicated with, among other things, the involvement of the Mafia, the unmasking of the duchess and a rekindled love affair between "Philly" and "Gilley." Yet, despite these elaborate plot machinations, the characters remain one-dimensional (flighty Gilbert, Philip's yuppie sister and brother-in-law in the suburbs, amoral Moira Finch, the bride), failing to engage the reader's interest in them or in their predicaments. Keenan has Philip narrating in a contrived, light hearted tone and pursuing stereotypes of pretentiously artsy New Yorkers and high-strung, irrational gays. Truly one of the best humour books so far.

Family Dancing David Leavitt
Deposit: SGD12.00
Refund: SGD4.00

Tender, unsettling, and amusing, these stories present families all unhappy in their own different ways. A mother who presides over her local Parents of Lesbians and Gays chapter has trouble accepting her son's lover. A recently separated couple's compulsion to maintain a twenty-six-year tradition seems to magnify futility. These stories are near perfection--and our of a writer in his early 20s!--with well-drawn characters and serious themes, though sometimes playful treatments. Leavitt's preoccupations seem to be with the family, homosexuality, and cancer, but he has yet to make any of these topics stale. Highly recommended.

Herotica 5: A Collection of Women's Erotic Fiction Marcy Sheiner
Deposit: SGD25.00
Refund: SGD17.00

In this gathering of 23 new erotic stories penned by women, Sheiner, (who also edited Herotica 4) proves yet again that good erotica combines playfulness, quality writing and dramatic momentum. Although none is overtly brutal, these stories are not for puritans. The range of activities includes bondage, threesomes, masturbation, lesbian and heterosexual trysts, exhibitionism, domination and pure fantasy. Whether the subject is matchmaking in Bombay or virtual sex, there are no shrinking violets here, only roses? And some thorns thrown in for kicks.

Matricide Carla Tomaso
Deposit: SGD14.00
Refund: SGD6.00

The unnamed narrator of Matricide is not happy. A high school English teacher and author of one bad novel, she tends to her ex-lover's cats and longs to fall in love. With friend and principal Doris and recent ex-student Tina, she drives to Taos for a women writers' conference. There she meets 60-year-old Pulitzer Prize-winner Blaire Bennett, who appears naked in her room and announces, "I am not a nice person." The narrator has had plenty of experience with people who are not nice, beginning with her beautiful, competitive mother. These relationships grow, revealing secrets: Doris's drinking, Tina's ambivalent coming-out, the matricide of the title and even darker conflicts and betrayals. At once entertaining and wounding, Tomaso (The House of Real Love) deftly builds her characters and their concerns. What might have been insipid and bitter-the worst intersection of Jane DeLynn's Don Juan in the Village and Diane Salvatore's Love, Zena Beth-is instead funny, moving and horrifying. The narrator's bravado and cynicism are tempered by bursts of romanticism, creating a tension that reveals her vulnerability and humanity. The characters' embarrassing poetry aside, the writing is lucid and deceptively simple. Matricide is a coming-of-age-story, one whose parameters are not years of experience, but memories. Definitely one of the books you can't miss.

A book not to be missed for the young lesbians. Coming out stories, dealing with denial of parents, writers of this book made all these issues seemed easy to deal with. Compassionate, compelling yet with a touch of humour. A must read for even if you're not gay.

The Woman Who Gave Birth To Rabbits Emma Donoghue
Deposit: SGD22.00
Refund: SGD13.00

This is a wonderful book of fictions that are also true. It is named for Mary Toft, a real woman, who, in 1726, managed to convince half of England that she'd laboured and given birth to a rabbit. Resurrecting buried scandals, audacious hoaxes and private tragedies, lesbian author Emma Donaghue has written a sequence of short stories about peculiar moments in the history of the British Isles. Here artists mix with poisoners and countesses rub shoulders with cross-dressers, vicars with revolutionaries.

Honk It You Love Aphrodite Daniel Evans Weiss
Deposit: SGD23.00
Refund: SGD14.00

The ancient Greek gods live! Weary of Athenian smog, however, they have decamped Olympus for the Catskills. Aphrodite's youngest son wants to prove his mettle by helping a mortal. He is sent to aid Stanley on an epic journey home from a reunion with two pals at Khoni (i.e., Coney Island) to his wife, Eileen, on the upper West Side. First, the god has to assume mortal shape at Stanley's side. Striking globular friend Myron with a thirst that chains him to the beer stand (and sending the other guy after a woman), the god becomes Myron (literally a stretch) and sees Stanley through a night of adventures in the depths of Brooklyn that even includes, as a good epic should, a journey to the underworld--via subway, of course. When the god gets Stanley home, there are complications, even though Eileen is most beauteous and amorous. Mixing verse with prose, Weiss' hilarious mock epic apparently assumes that, if this kind of parody worked for modernist Joyce, it will work for post moderns.

Cravings: A Sensuous Memoir Jyl Lyn Felman
Deposit: SGD27.00
Refund: SGD18.00

In the essays contained in Cravings: A Sensual Memoir, writer and performance artist Jyl Lynn Felman looks at desire not in the abstract, but in the particular: she considers a child's craving for a mother's attention, a daughter's craving for a specific piece of the family china, a lover's craving for her beloved. Felman contextualizes herself as a Jew, a feminist, a lesbian, and a person who grew up in Ohio. She examines how each of these selves experiences desire differently. Cravings is also a memoir of family life, of sibling rivalries that outlast childhood, and of the grief, regret, and anger that a daughter feels because of her parent's death.

Refund: SGD10.00

After a whirlwind courtship with Richard, the gentle small-town vet she met in London, Sarah finds herself, to her surprise, moving to Australia as his bride. But on the morning of the wedding itself, she realizes she has made the worst mistake of her life.
While the wedding is quickly turning into bad news for some, it's good news for Richard's younger brother Harry, who can at least take some comfort in the fact that his Debbie Harry tribute band has been booked for the reception. Better still, the cute young Wiccan he'd like to date isn't put off by his Blondie obsession, who would rather date his bisexual drummer in his band.
Meanwhile, Richard's best friend Tom is wondering if he's crazy to live with a woman old enough to be his mother. Especially as she disapproves of nearly everything in his life, including Richard and Sarah.
The only invited guest not at the wedding is in Sydney. Richard's first wife Bronte, a successful magazine editor, threw her wedding invitation in the trash. But she finds herself mysteriously drawn to visit Richard, despite her best efforts to put those thoughts out of her mind.
By the end of the summer, life - and love - will have gotten back on track again, but not before one small town in Australia nearly explodes with heat, and an overdose of passion.

Local Girls Alice Hoffman

More than a collection of short stories, yet not quite a novel, Local Girls occupies an undefined territory between these two forms. The local girls in question are Gretel Samuelson, her best friend, Jill, her mother, Franny, and Franny's cousin Margot--four characters who weave in and out of each of the 15 related stories that chronicle the rocky years of Gretel's adolescence room. If you ask me, working so hard at being married can backfire." It is the end of the marriage All pretty depressing plot points, to be sure, yet Hoffman's luminous prose combined with Gretel's tart and funny perspective keeps the reader eagerly turning the pages until the very end.
