Singapore National Aeromodeling Championship 2003,

F3C competition

D-Day minus one : Training session

15th August 2003, cloudy, 4pm, Bukit Batok Flying Club

The participants for the F3C competition had arrived a day earlier for a training session at Bukit Batok Flying Club. The Bukit Batok Flying Club was the host for the F3C competition. It was very honoured to have top pilots from Indonesia and Hong Kong participanting in this event. There would also be a 3D freestyle demostration by the top Japan pilot, Mr. Yamaguchi.

The participants for the F3C competitions are:

I visited the flying club at 4pm at watch how the participants practised and since it was a training session, I had an enjoyable time chatting with the pilots. Mr Stephen from Cyberheli was here too. I finally get to know the MAN in person. Cyberheli is a big online store based in Hong Kong. I had requested Mr Stephen to bring his exotic Henseleit 3DNT helicopter for demostration flights.

Here are some pictures of the 3DNT.

Left : 3DNT is exotic looking because of it's bullet shape canopy. But this sleek canopy can make orientation difficult. The pilot must spend some time to practise the orientation.

Right: Full carbon frame of the 3DNT. It has 3 Futaba 9206 servo for CCPM control and is powered by the awesome Webra91.

Left : The moving flybar system on the 3DNT rotorhead. The flybar moves up and down together with the swash plate. There are no radius and slide block.

Right : Note the big main gear and the long Hatori exhaust system. The carbon landing skids are strengthen by 2 pieces of cross member.

Left : 3DNT belt driven tail. GY601 with S9251 is used for superb tail control.

Right: Front view of the 3DNT. Note the light and long 3D paddles. Mr Stephen explained that since 3DNT does 3D at lower rpm, these 3D paddles will provide better cyclic response. The Enya #3 glow plug is used on the Webra91 engine.

Mr Philip Chong doing a test flight with the 3DNT with Mr Stephen at his side. I was impressed by the power of the Webra91 and the light weight 3DNT. Unfortunately, I'm flying mode 2 and can't give the 3DNT a go.

The majority of the flying time were taken up by the F3C participants. The precision flying was incredible. The most difficult part was to hover well in cross winds. The sky was cloudy and it looked like it was going to rain, a sudden gust of cross wind can throw a heli out of a stable hover. Because of my limited flying experience, I can't really comment on the flying standard. But one thing for sure, I need to practise more in order to fly like them. Ah Sing from Cyberheli gave a 3D demo with his Fury Extreme. Wow...who says mode 1 pilot can't do a piro flip. It's all in the mind.

Left : The Tempest FAI rotorhead fitted onto a Pro2K frame. Wow, you have to see it to believe how stable it is.

Right : The pilot is Mr Michael from Hong Kong. He is using TG contest blades.

Mr Michael is the F3C champion from Hong Kong. His Xcell heli is powered by a Webra91 with CY MP2. Team manager Mr Stephen was looking on from the back.

Left : A Hirobo Freya EX WC flew by the Indonesia team. Note that the landing skid is backward facing.

Right: A Hirobo Eagle 98 EX WC flew by the Indonesia Team. Do not under estimate the power of this heli, even though it is a 98 spec. In the background is a stock Hirobo Freya 90 and it flew very well, compared to the other more expensive contest helicopter.

Left: A Hirobo Freya EX WC flown by Mr Philip from Singapore. This is his number one helicopter. SIN 112 was his number when he was supposed to represent Singapore in the World F3C championship. Unfortunately the trip was cancelled due to SARS.

Right: Also a Hirobo Freya EX WC. Number two helicopter for Mr Philip. The tatoo design is very attractive. Both of his helicopters are powered by YS91.

Yong Chun from Singapore is flying the JR Vigor CS. SIN 111 was his number when he was supposed to represent Singapore in the World F3C championship. Yong Chun is one of the younger r/c helicopter pilots in Singapore and he flew very well.
